Roussillon and the Provençal Colorado

The village of Roussillon and its ochers with thousand shades : In Roussillon, the ocher is everywhere ! shades of red, orange, yellow burst on the facades of houses, in the surrounding landscape. The village is located in the heart of the ocher deposit : it dominates the old quarries. Early in the morning we walk the cobbled streets of the red city bathed in sunshine. We go up to the Romanesque church. It leads to a platform that offers a superb viewpoint over the surrounding plains. Far off, we see our national Mount Fuji, the Mount Ventoux that of which the clear air makes very close.

We go down to the village to get us in the old ocher quarries rendered to a semi-natural state since the end of its exploitation in 1992. We take the path of ochers. Two routes are proposed, one of 30 minutes and another of 60 minutes. Children have no trouble making the journey of 60 minutes (but more than 60 minutes, we take our time). The site of Roussillon ochers is open from 9:30 to 6:30 p.m. in September; Children under 10 years old do not pay. The full rate entry is 2,50 euros per person.

It is in a magical place carved by water, wind and the human hand that we go. We discover cliffs, reddish needles and hoodoos which contrast with its green bower of pine, oak and chestnut trees.

The ochers of Rustrel, Provençal Colorado : This ocher travels the Luberon on thirty kilometers, it is found a little further south on a site with a unique landscape in the world known as the Provencal Colorado. This site is located in the municipality of Rustrel. It covers 30 hectares and offers a variety of special colors : bright white, golden yellow, orange, crimson, bright red, brown, over twenty colors intermingle in this palette worthy of that of an awesome artist-painter. Only the entrance of the parking is not free : €4 per car, it is €10 per camper and minibus with the possibility to remain on site overnight.

You should have a day to browse this site quietly with the children. From the parking, we take a path that allows us to do a loop around the ochers of Rustrel and inside it.

We climb to the top of circus Barriès circus, large scarlet amphitheater bristling with needles in a green bower. It bypasses the circus then descend towards the White Desert, we find ourselves on the foot of snow colored cliffs. We go back and access to multiple views on long orange fairy chimneys. Far off, one can distinguish amazing cliffs.

After the lunch break in the shade of a forest, we go to ... Sahara: This part of the site is comprised of nipples. We really feel that we have changed continent in a few steps and end up in a sandy desert. Children run around, play to overcome these rocky dunes or to meander between them.
